West Georgia Winds is an honor band that serves students in the West Georgia area. Auditions are this Sunday afternoon, and rehearsals will begin in late October. The honor band meets weekly on Sunday afternoons for each 6 - week concert cycle.

​West Georgia Winds auditions are open for all students 6th through 8th grade. Have your child talk to me about auditioning if you're interested in them participating!

Moses Middle School is traditionally very well-represented in West Georgia Winds. I can't wait to watch the newest generation of our students perform with this honor band!

6th Grade Band students will take a summative test over their first five notes and their fingerings. Students will be expected to label pitches and fill in fingerings for each of the five notes. 

Since this is a summative test, students will not be able to retake until they get a 100. Instead, they can submit test corrections for half credit.

​This Friday, August 30th, is EPHS' and NPHS' 8th Grade Night!

Here's some more information about 8th Grade Night: what is it, how does it work, and why does it help our band program?

8th Grade Night allows our 8th grade students from all EPHS and NPHS feeder middle schools to meet the high school band students and play with them in the stands and at pregame. This event gives our students the opportunity to see up-close exactly what high school marching band is like. At Moses, we're investing in vertical alignment and in building a legacy - we want every student at MMS to continue on into high school band.

​Both EPHS and NPHS have 8th Grade Night events this Friday. They are separate events.

4:30 - Drop-off begins at EPHS band room (in the back of the school)
5:00 - Drop-off ends at EPHS band room
5:00 - Meeting in the band room with EPHS marching band and 8th grade students
5:15 -  Students participate in a get-to-know-you activity with their sections
5:30 - Stands tunes rehearsal begins
6:15 - Students parade into stadium 
6:20 - Concession stand performance
6:30 - Students set up in stands and proceed to pregame performance
7:00 - Kick-off and game begins
~8:30-9:00 Half-time performance
~9:30-10:00 Game ends, student pickup begins

Students attending the EPHS event can be picked up in-person from the band room after the game ends. If you need to leave after halftime, you need to check your child out in person.

Students attending the NPHS event must be picked up after halftime from the band room. If you plan to attend the game and have your child stay after halftime, you can arrange for them to meet you in the stands.

What do MMS students wear?
Students should wear a Moses shirt (or a black or red shirt if they don't own one), a pair of blue jeans, and tennis shoes. They will be standing for long periods of time, so comfortable shoes are a must! All students must abide by MMS dress code at the event. Our 8th graders will receive an 8th grade night t-shirt when they arrive at EPHS or NPHS.

Is this event required?
Yes, this event is required for all students districted for EPHS. Participation in this event is a summative grade.

​My child plays a school-owned or large instrument.

Some students will be able to bring their own instruments, while others will need to play on marching instruments provided by the high school. The instrument guide went out on Wednesday, 8/28, in an email; let me know if you'd like for me to forward the guide to you.

I have very limited space in my car, so if you need my help with transporting instruments, reach out as soon as you can.

All 8th grade band students are required to attend their high school's 8th Grade Night. This event is a celebration of their time in middle school and a giant welcome to high school band. See the below links for specific information.

More in-depth information regarding schedules, pick-up and drop-off times, etc., will be emailed out ASAP.

Saturday, 8/24 - Super Saturday at EPMS from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

6th Grade Band NBI students will not attend band class on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week due to Beacon testing. This test is a pre-test that students are required to take per our new county initiative. Band NBI will resume as normal on Thursday!

What you need to know about instrument safety:

• Don't allow your child to put together their instrument on Friday.
• Don't allow your child to remove the instrument from its case on Friday.

If your child already has their instrument, they can choose to bring it to school on Friday to be a part of the ceremony. This is not a requirement - we won't be playing in class on Friday, so they won't miss out if they don't bring it to school.

Be on the lookout for an email and website post in the coming days with a detailed schedule for Saturday. Here is the day's information at a glance:

6th grade students will receive their instrument certificates on Tuesday during class. If your child is still unsure of what they'd like to play, we have until Friday to finalize all choices.

Important: Your child's schedule may change depending on their instrument selection. Students are grouped based on instrumentation (more below). 5th and 6th period classes will swap if your child's instrument selection requires it. Your child's classes will not change.

NBI - mixed instrumentation - flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone

Each DLD, we will have a grade-specific playing assignment. Since not all students have their instruments, we will begin with a refresher on submitting video assignments!

Final exams are upon us! Each grade level has a different final exam/chair test requirement:

• 6th Grade: 6th Final Etude and Concert F and Bb scales
• 7th Grade: 7th Final Etude and Concert F, Bb, Eb, and Ab scales
• 8th Grade: High School Etude and Concert F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, and B scales

All 8th grade students have completed their finals. 6th and 7th grade Canvas submissions will be open until Friday, May 10th. If you do not play your final in person or submit via Canvas, you will be placed at the bottom of the section for next school year. ​The deadline to do so is this Friday, May 10th.

We will depart Moses at 9:45 a.m. and return at 1:30 p.m. If you would like to check your child out following the field trip, please wait in the front office - and remember to be patient! We love our front office staff, and they do an outstanding job of supporting our band program.

Reminders:

• Students will be fed a pizza lunch. You may send them with cash or card to purchase snacks at the snack bar.
• Permission forms are past due. If your child has not returned a permission form by Tuesday afternoon, they may not travel on the field trip.
• Good behavior is integral to our success as a band program! If your child has had ISS or OSS, they may not travel on the field trip. If your child receives ISS on Monday or Tuesday of this week, they will be pulled from the trip.
• Students may choose to bring a small bag (like a string backpack or purse). They may not bring their backpacks or instruments on Wednesday.

Our spring concert is finally here!

Here is the concert day schedule:

Call time: 5:30 p.m.
Break/doors open: 6:30 p.m.
In seats ready to perform: 6:45 p.m.
Concert begins: 7:00 p.m.

We will conduct an awards ceremony during the spring concert. The concert should be a maximum of 45 minutes long. Dress for the concert is casual uniform: black band t-shirts, jeans, and tennis shoes.

Saturday - District VII Clinic Honor Band!

Mr. Robichaux, the director at EPHS, and Mr. Mack, the director at NPHS, will be visiting during 8th grade band this week to hear high school concert band auditions. This audition does not take the place of rookie camp or drumline/colorguard auditions. This is a concert band audition that is also 8th grade band's final grade in middle school.

Mrs. Townsend, our chorus director, has decided to include the band and chorus' combined piece on this Thursday's program. All 8th grade band students are required to attend the chorus concert at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 2nd. We will perform Homeward Bound with the chorus.

All students performing with the District VII Clinic Honor Band will arrive at 6:40 on Saturday morning. Please park on the left side of the school in the teacher parking lot, then have your child walk to the bus. The buses will be lined up in the bus lane.

Students should wear t-shirts, jeans, and tennis shoes. They will receive their Clinic Band t-shirt the day of the event. Students should bring at least $10 in cash to purchase a snack or a souvenir at Buc-ee's!

Clinic Band will perform at 5:00 p.m. at Hammond Creek Middle School. Please plan to attend the concert! Your child will need to ride home with you after. If you have a conflict and are not able to attend, please let me know - we have a limited number of seats available on the bus.
